Meet Agate the moose. He’s a big brown galoot who doesn’t think he’s very special when he compares himself to his animal friends who are named after gemstones. “What good is a moose?” he asks himself. What good is a moose, indeed - his beautiful friends help him to see that, just like his namesake the agate, true beauty comes from what’s inside. This stunning book features original watercolors and a poignant, witty message that resonates with anyone who has ever felt like they don’t quite belong.

This book is a terrific gift for kids, parents, grandparents, teachers, art book and children’s book collectors, moose lovers and rock hounds. Get one for yourself and one for each gem in your life! Includes bonus pages with information on all the birthstones and agates, too. 48 pages, watercolor illustrations, 9" x 10". Hardcover with jacket.

From Letters to Agate

September 6, 2012
By Denna' Muncy (Newport NC)

Oh, what a lovely surprise you were to find today as I sat researching the Internet. My name is Denna' and I live here in Newport, North Carolina. I belong to the local Women of the Moose Lodge #2160 and am involved with helping to upstart a Kid's Moose program. This program will not only help children from the ages of 3-19 learn about community service it will help teach skill sets which are seldom found in our school system today. Once not so long ago as a Marines child; I would move around often and even though I loved traveling, starting in a new school always made me feel like a 'Moose' I know that most of the children in our program, are from military families and they too have shared feeling like a 'Moose'.

In finding your lovely written and illustrated book today; it not only gave me a warmth in my heart, but I have knew it to be a great find to help our children. I would like to introduce Agate to them ALL and use him and the moral of this story as a part of the foundation for teaching in our program. I have yet to purchase this book but rest assured that I will in the very near future! I am so excited to have this during our future meetings and know that the kids will love it too! I also want to share it with our military school system; as well as our local school system and library here!

I hope that in sharing this here, it will soon spread everywhere we have a Moose Lodge.  You see Agate, a Kids Moose program has never been done for children as young as three normally they offer programs to teenagers but I believe that helping teach our younger children of today will certainly help change their futures tomorrow.

Fabulous Life Lesson Beautifully Taught, June 19, 2012
By Jennifer M Low (Collegeville, PA United States)

This review is from: Agate: What Good Is a Moose? (Hardcover)

I am an elementary art teacher and a collector of children's books. When I originally discovered this book in a tiny bookshop in New England I was immediately drawn to this book because of its gorgeously simplistic illustrations. After I read it I knew I'd found the "gem" of my collection! The message of the text makes this book an unforgettable and essential addition to ANY library... children's or otherwise!!!

I have never written a review for anything on Amazon before but felt if anything deserved in, this book does! I have purchased several copies over the years to hand out to struggling friends and students as well as to give as gifts. Everyone else who enters my classroom or expresses an interest in seeing my children's book collection is shown this book first... and many are brought to tears. Nothing has the potential to teach life lessons as simply and eloquently and poignantly as do children's books!

I read this book every year to my second graders as a motivation for our ceramic unit. We make "beauty pots" that resemble agates to remind us of the lesson of this book: inside beauty is more important than outside beauty and, just like an agate, we are ALL filled with a unique and beautiful potential! This book and this lesson make such an impact on my students that I have actually begun a collection of agates on a window sill in my classroom: students bring them to me as gifts at the end of the school year.
I heartily recommend purchasing this book!!! ...multiple copies of it! I'm buying more today!

What a delightful story and watercolor pictures to share with a young person. This gives the message that whomever you are and however you look, you are worthwhile. Can't think of a better message to give a child--or an adult. True confession: although I will share this with my young friends and students, I bought this for myself!

A Diamond in The Rough, June 6, 2009
By BarbaraG

This review is from: Agate: What Good Is a Moose? (Hardcover)

Digging for a book to help infuse character into a science lesson or vice versa, I recently unearthed this clever rhyming story about an awkwardly gangly moose named Agate.
As he compares himself to his beautifully polished friends, all of whom have sparkly names of birthstone gems and correspondingly brilliant characteristics, Agate asks, "What good is a moose?"
To assuage his self-doubt, Agate's friends challenge him to look inward for what makes him shine. Much like trying to find plain agate rock, whose beauty is found within, Agate the Moose has to do some excavating to find the qualities that make him every bit as valuable as his treasured friends.
Agate's message reinforces the adage, "Don't judge a book by its cover" and spotlights the importance of valuing one's inner character.
An extension writing exercise can pose the question, "What makes me shine?" or "What do I look for in friends?" This gem will supplement the calendar lesson for younger students as each of Agate's 12 friends represents a birthstone.
The information in the back about gemstones will serve as a geology lesson as well. This book is a diamond in the rough that I enthusiastically recommend.
